Something larger than ourselves

I was reading recently in Leadership Lessons from West Point that..."Research indicates that the personal meaningfulness of serving and wanting to contribute to something larger than themselvers is a powerful enlistment motivation for many soldiers... [I]ntrinsic caring about a task, the task having personal meaning for the individual, and the individual believing that his or her efforts have a positive and substantial impact on the lives of others and importance beyond the immediate situation
all contribute to empowerment and organizational commitment... The Army has
an advantage over most private sector organizations because of the nature
of its role..."
True enough, but how about being involved in helping fulfill the Great
Commission (Matt 28:19-20)? You and I, as representatives of Jesus Christ,
call men and women to respond to truth that will change their eternal destiny from hell to heaven and affords them power to begin living a full and meaningful life far beyond
anything they have ever known. Talk about a "task" that has "personal meaning
for the individual" and "a positive impact on the lives of others and importance
beyond the immediate situation"!! Thank God for the Army, but being a soldier
for Christ far surpasses in significance not only the military, but any other
endeavor.
Thanks for the essential role that each of you play in helping influencers
become Great Commission leaders. It is an honor and privilege for me to serve
with you in this mission.
